Shoji Hamada Blog #3

Shoji Hamada was a Japanese potterer known for his exquisite and unique pottery.  He is thought to be one of the most detrimental potterers of the 20th Century.  His work is extremely unique because he reflects English medieval pottery, okinawan stoneware, and Korean pottery.  All three designs are different from each other in a way that many people not think they work, however Hamada had a different vision and as a result made beautiful and uncommon pottery than the rest.  He set the bar for everyone after his time and for that he received many awards.  The flower vase pictured below is an example of his work.  The bottom of the flower vase looks very similar to stoneware but the shape and design reflect more of English medieval pottery. The top is also more smooth and symmetrical like Korean pottery. The many textures and shapes is exactly what makes the look so appealing.  I really like this vase because of the different styles as well as the design and glaze.  I also think the bottom of the vase is really interesting because it looks like two different bottoms!
